13 Feb 2026, Kuching - As households prepare for the upcoming festive period, Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) is reminding the public to practise safe handling of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders. These simple steps help prevent leaks, fires, and other incidents in the home.
PETROS advises all LPG users to follow these safety tips:
- Check your equipment
Inspect the regulator and hose regularly for cracks, wear, or damage. Only use SIRIM-approved regulators and hoses.
- Ensure good ventilation
Store LPG cylinders in a well-ventilated area and ensure your kitchen has adequate airflow during cooking.
- Position appliances safely
Where practical, place the stove higher than the cylinder and maintain a safe distance of 1-1.5 metres between the cylinder and the cooking flame.
- If you detect a leak
If a leak occurs, LPG will settle and accumulate near the floor, especially in low or enclosed areas. This increases the risk of ignition.
- If you smell gas or hear a hissing sound, turn off all flames immediately.
- Do not switch electrical appliances on or off.
- Open windows and doors to improve ventilation.
- If safe to do so, move the cylinder outdoors to a ventilated area.
- Keep clear of the floor area, where gas may have collected.
- Use soapy water to check for leaks
Apply soapy water to connection points; bubbles indicate a leak. If bubbles appear, remove the regulator and place the cylinder in a ventilated area. Replace faulty parts only with approved components.
- Follow proper ignition steps
Light your ignition source before turning on the gas.
- Never leave cooking unattended
Turn off the burner and regulator as soon as cooking is done.
PETROS emphasises that simple, routine checks play an important role in reducing safety risks.
